The Korea Institute for National Unification said Thursday that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s government will not likely collapse easily.
In a report, the institute said the Pyongyang government is unlikely to collapse easily despite weakened communist ideology and the influx of foreign information, as long as the North’s elites and strict social control prevail.
Among three-hundred-14 North Korean defectors to the South polled in the report, 71 percent predicted that Kim’s regime would not last another ten years.
However, the report concluded that there was little chance of governmental collapse, based on in-depth interviews with twelve high-level North Korean defectors.
Still, the report pointed out that the crumbling of North Korea’s key values is accelerating.
In addition, the paper said that North Koreans are increasingly losing their vision for the future, while their distrust of the communist party is rising.
