North Korea’s organization in charge of inter-Korean affairs has called on South Koreans to wage a campaign against the main opposition Grand National Party (GNP) ahead of the presidential election in December.
The North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland said in a statement Thursday that the GNP’s regaining of political power is not only related to South Korea’s internal affairs, but also one that concerns peace, reunification and the lives of all Korean people.
The committee warned that if the GNP takes power again, it could hamper inter-Korean relations as well as bring about a crisis on the Korean Peninsula.
The committee’s statement came Thursday in response to the GNP’s earlier denunciation of a joint New Year editorial carried by major North Korean state-run newspapers.
On Tuesday, the GNP blasted Pyongyang for meddling in South Korean politics after the editorial urged South Koreans to prevent the conservative party from winning this December's presidential elections.
