Beligian surgeon, Jacque Rogge, was named as the new president of the International Olympic committee, beating South Korea's Kim Un-yong. At five o'clock p.m. Korean Standard Time, Samaranch announced Rogge as the 8th IOC President.
Five IOC members competed to replace Samaranch, who is leaving the post after 21 years. The election began during the IOC meeting in Moscow at 11 am local time or 4 am Korean Standard Time. The candidate with the least votes American Anita DeFrantz, was eliminated in the first round of voting. In the second round, where four other candidates including Jacque Rogge and South Korean Kim Un-yong competed, Rogge succeeded in obtaining a majority of the votes. The new IOC president will serve an eight-year-term, which is renewable only once for another four years.
