Prosecution combing through newspaper bank accounts

Written: 2001-07-18 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The Seoul District Prosecutor's Office investigating alleged tax evasion by media firms said Wednesday that it is going through bank accounts of the newspapers that have been charged by the National Tax Service.
The probe into the accounts began last week and the prosecution also plans to call in incumbent executives of the dailies for questioning this weekend in an attempt to gain an idea of the flow and destination of funds at the newspapers.
In particular, the prosecution is expected to step up its investigation into relatives of the newspaper owners.
From its probe into lower-level executives and staff members, the prosecution has reportedly secured clues that might prove the tax evasion charges true.
