Korean Remains in Japan Fall Short of Expectations

The government says that Japan has not been active in returning the remains of Korean conscripted soldiers and workers who died in Japan during the second World War.

The Truth Commission on Forced Mobilization under the Japanese Imperialism said Monday that Tokyo announced it had found remains of some 17-hundred Koreans during a related bilateral conference last November.

The commission went on to say, however, that the results came far short of the some 220-thousand reported cases of people forced into labor and military service under Japanese colonial rule.

A commission official said that, although a Japanese religious organization pledged to do additional digging until the end of May, Japan’s private sector and provincial governments have shown little progress.

Among the 220-thousand Koreans for whom reports have been filed, over 31-thousand were reported dead and nine-thousand missing.
