North Korea and China were found to have an agreement which requires one to immediately notify the other of people arrested for crossing the border illegally.

The two countries' public security ministries, comprising their respective national police authorities, signed the border agreement in July 1998.

The agreement, which was a stricter version of a previous accord made in 1986, simplified the process for handing over criminals and defectors to their home country.

The current pact will remain in effect until 2018.
