Written: 2007-02-08 13:40:11Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The government is mulling whether to allow North Korean rice into the country as gift items following the request of a South Korean civic group to import a small amount of rice from the North.

The Agriculture Ministry in Seoul said it will issue a notice allowing about two tons of rice a year to be imported from the North after consulting with domestic farmers’ organizations.

The ministry said that such an amount will not affect the domestic rice market, adding that it will strictly block any illegal distribution.
