The government will seek to discuss with North Korea measures to establish a basis for inter-Korean arms control.
According to the Unification Ministry's agenda for 2007, Seoul will work actively to ease military tension and build trust between the two Koreas in order to establish a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
In the agenda, the ministry declared that regular contacts between South and North Korean defense chiefs and generals are a necessity, and will propose such talks when ministers from the two sides meet Tuesday in Pyongyang.
Meanwhile, Seoul is planning to discuss ways to encourage arms control and allow mutual verification. It is the first time for South Korea to officially seek inter-Korean arms control aimed at reducing both armaments and military spending.
Also, the South will propose to the North a direct line between the two countries' defense ministers and other joint measures to prevent accidental military conflict and to ease military tension.
