Former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan is visiting North Korea on Wednesday.
Lee will stay in Pyongyang until Sunday and will be accompanied by fellow legislators from the ruling Uri Party. His visit was planned after an invitation from the North’s Council of National Reconciliation.
Lee is scheduled to meet with the North’s parliamentary leader Kim Yong-nam and discuss the implementation of the February 13th nuclear agreement and establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. It's not known whether the ex-prime minister will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
Earlier on Tuesday, Lee met with former President Kim Dae-jung and sought Kim's advice on his planned talks with North Korean officials. Lee accompanied Kim to the communist state in 2000 for the first inter-Korean summit in June.
Lee’s visit has sparked rumors that the former prime minister is traveling as a special envoy to arrange an inter-Korean summit as he is one of President Roh Moo-hyun’s special political advisors.
