A North Korean seaman has defected to South Korea.

The defector, identified only by his surname Choi, was rescued last Wednesday by a South Korean vessel some two kilometers off Ulleung Island.

The seaman, a native of Gilgu, North Hamgyeong Province, had been drifting in the region after leaving Russia on a Russian vessel on Sunday. He was the only person aboard.

The maritime police are investigating Choi, who expressed his intention to defect to the South after being rescued.
