Daegu has been named the host city for the 2011 World Athletics Championships by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Association President Lamine Diack said Tuesday that the IAAF council picked Korea's third-largest city over Russia's Moscow and Australia's Brisbane in a vote held in Mombasa, Kenya.

With the council’s selection, South Korea joins an elite club of athletics powers to host three major global sporting events: the Summer Olympics, the World Cup and the World Athletics Championships.

Korea is the seventh country to host the three events after Italy, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Spain and France.
