A United Nations panel on human rights in Geneva unanimously adopted a resolution Monday that demanded an apology and compensation from countries that benefited from colonialism and slavery.
The resolution is drawing attention in Korea as it contains clauses relevant to the controversial Japanese textbook and "comfort women issues".
The resolution is expected to encourage the South Korean government to bring the two issues before the U.N. panel and put more international pressure on Japan during the upcoming World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa that begins at the end of this month.
The U.N. resolution called for countries that benefited from colonialism and the slave trade to assume full responsibility and pay compensation to those who suffered.
Speaking at a U.N. panel on human rights, a top North Korean delegate urged Japan to rectify distorted history books and make an official apology and compensation for victims.
