Trains to Cross Border for 1st Time in 60 Yrs

Test runs of two inter-Korean railways will be conducted Thursday, ending a suspension of cross-border train service that has lasted nearly 60 years.

The two Koreas will hold a ceremony to mark the occasion Thursday morning at Munsan Station on the Gyeongui Line and at the Mount Geumgang Station on the Donghae Line.

The test runs will begin from 11:30 a.m. on a 27-point-three kilometer section through the North Korean city of Gaesong on the western Gyeongui Line. On the eastern part of the peninsula, they will cover a 25-point-five kilometer section through South Korea's Jejin on the Donghae Line.

Train service across the military demarcation line is the first for the Gyeongui Line since June 1951 and the first for the Donghae since the Korean War broke out in June 1950.

The Gyeongui train will be driven by a South Korean-made diesel locomotive pulling four passenger cars and a generator. The Donghae Line train will have the same car composition, but will be driven by a North Korean-made engine. A hundred South Koreans and 50 North Koreans will board each train.

For the return ride, the trains are expected to cross the military demarcation line again around 3:30 p.m.
