The Cultural Heritage Administration said Wednesday that scholars from the two Koreas will jointly excavate an ancient royal palace site in the North Korean city of Gaesong from Friday.

During the two-month-long project, which was agreed during recent inter-Korean ministerial talks, about ten experts from South and North Korea will excavate Manwoldae, the site of the royal palace of Korea’s ancient Goryeo Dynasty.

The experts will begin their search in the northwestern area of the Manwoldae site. They may move on to examining the palace's structure, depending on the outcome of consultations with the North.

The Goryeo palace was established in 919 and burned down by Chinese rebels in 1361.
