Trains began running on reconnected cross-border railways Thursday, crossing the inter-Korean border for the first time in nearly 60 years.
The two Koreas held ceremonies before beginning the test runs at 11:30 a.m. The northbound train left the South’s Munsan Station and the southbound one left the North’s Mount Geumgang Station.
The northbound diesel train crossed the military demarcation line (MDL) around a quarter past noon on the Gyeongui Line. The southbound one on the Donghae Line crossed around 12:20 p.m.
Aboard each train was a group of one-hundred South Koreans and 50 North Koreans.
The Gyeongui Line runs 27-point-three kilometers from Munsan to Gaesong and the Donghae runs 25-point-five kilometers from Mount Geumgang to Jejin.
The Gyeongui Line stopped operations between Seoul and Gaesong in June 1951. Travel on the Donghae Line had been frozen a year earlier in 1950 at the outset of the Korean War.
