Gov’t Officials Unlikely to Fete 6/15 in Pyongyang

South Korean officials are not likely to join celebrations in Pyongyang to mark the seventh anniversary of a joint statement issued during historic inter-Korean summit talks on June 15th, 2000.

A Unification Ministry official in Seoul said that the two Koreas agreed during recent inter-Korean ministerial talks to discuss a joint celebration through liaison officer contacts. But the North has yet to make a formal proposal.

The official added that the South Korean government will not be able to send a government-level delegation if North Korea doesn’t offer a formal invitation by Tuesday.

Since 2005, Seoul and Pyongyang have taken turns hosting festivities commemorating the anniversary of the joint statement, which have included the participation of government-level representatives.

This year’s four-day festival will open in Pyongyang on Thursday.
