Two ancient Korean cultural treasures have been recognized by the United Nations as belonging to global cultural heritage.
UNESCO’s International Advisory Committee decided during its meeting Friday in Pretoria, South Africa to register the "Joseon Dynasty Uigwe" and the Tripitaka Koreana from the Goryeo Kingdom. The two works will be recognized in the organization& 039 s Memory of the World Register.
With the recent designation, South Korea now has a total of six items on the register, including the Joseon Royal Records.
UNESCO& 039 s Memory of the World International Register is a list of library and archive collections of global significance. It was established in 1992 to preserve and promote pieces of documentary heritage that are of universal value.
The "Joseon Dynasty Uigwe" is a collection of documents and pictures depicting Joseon-era royal ceremonies while the Tripitaka Koreana is a collection of woodblocks made in the early 13th century that contain Buddhist Scriptures.
