South Korean organizers said Monday the "2001 Peace Village inter-Korean festival will open inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the world's most heavily armed border, on Oct. 6 for a five-day run.
An organizing committee official said in a news conference that Pyongyang conveyed its intention to participate in the event last Tuesday via Chang Chol, chairman of the North's General Federation of Unions of Literature and Arts.
According to the plan, 20,000 participants, including some 500 South and North Korean artists, will set up a "village" of 50 tents inside the southern side of the DMZ, where they will stay for five days and nights to discuss peace on the Korean Peninsula and to promote friendship.
