President Roh Moo-hyun is in Guatemala to drum up support at a meeting of the International Olympics Committee for Pyeongchang’s bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The president will begin the first leg of his state visit to Guatemala Monday morning by holding a news conference with foreign media.
Mr. Roh is expected to stay in the country until the ballots are cast on Wednesday and campaign for Pyeongchang in a speech at the general meeting as well as interact with members of the committee on the sidelines.
He is also scheduled to hold summit talks with his Guatemalan counterpart President Oscar Berger.
Other heads of states from competing countries will also lobby for the games as Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer arrived in Guatemala Saturday and Russian President Vladmir Putin is scheduled to fly in on Monday.
South Korea’s Pyeongchang received the highest scores in a technical report last month, but is expected to get fierce competition from Russia’s Sochi and Austria’s Salzburg up until the final votes are cast.
