Roh Cites Unified Korean Team for P'chang Olympics

President Roh Moo-hyun says that if Korea's Pyeongchang wins its bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, the two Koreas may be able to field a unified team for the games.

While speaking to international news outlets like Reuters, the Associated Press and Agence France-Presse upon his arrival in Guatemala, he also said that North Korea has shown its support for the South Korean bid. The president is in the Central American country for the International Olympic Committee's general assembly, at which the host city will be decided in a vote this Wednesday.

Mr. Roh said that by 2014, South Korea will be able to host the Olympics amid stabilized and peaceful inter-Korean relations, citing ongoing efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.

He said that in this light, the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang will serve as a boost to peace in Northeast Asia and the world at large.

He went on to say, however, that regardless of the results this week, Korea will invest 13 million dollars more between next year and 2014 to the Dream Project, a training program for youths from countries lacking winter sports facilities.

The president said that while he can barely walk on ice skates, Korean fathers like himself want to teach their children to play sports on ice and snow.
