With only two days left until the final vote to decide on a host city for the 2014 Winter Olympics, German and Swiss media have reported that Pyeongchang is likely to win the bid.
Swiss public media reported Monday that Pyeongchang is currently leading the race and is the strongest candidate, because it received the highest scores in a technical report and also has the least weaknesses compared to the other cities.
A German daily also reported the atmosphere in Guatemala has swayed towards Pyeongchang which has taken on the challenge for the second time. It speculated that Russia’s Sochi is not likely to win due to low scores on the technical report leaving only Pyeongchang and Austria’s Salzburg in the race.
It also added that the local outlook in Salzburg is pessimistic and other factors, such as the Austrian Winter Olympics team’s recent doping scandal and the lack of government support, could hinder its bid.
The daily said the International Olympics Committee could rule in favor of Pyeongchang for regional balance across the globe, given that Europe has hosted the winter Olympics 13 times, but Asia only twice, both in Japan.
