Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and delivered his government's stance on the North's nuclear program.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a regular news briefing Tuesday that Yang called on Kim to implement initial steps toward nuclear disarmament and join the six-party talks as soon as possible.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Yang and North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun met earlier in the day to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations and exchange views on issues of mutual interest.

However, the details of their discussion were not disclosed.

The Chinese foreign minister arrived in Pyongyang on Monday at the invitation of his North Korean counterpart.
