Pyeongchang Loses Bid for 2014 Winter Games

The nation’s Pyeongchang city lost its bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games to Russia’s Sochi, the second defeat after it lost to Canada’s Vancouver for the 2010 bid.

The decision came at the International Olympic Committee’s general meeting held in Guatemala Thursday morning that went through two rounds of votes.

None of the three cities in the bid won the votes required in the first round leading to a runoff between South Korea’s Pyeongchang and Russia’s Sochi leaving Austria’s Salzberg out of the competition.

However, Russia’s Sochi won the majority in the second round becoming the official host for the 2014 Winter Games.
