The presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae said Thursday that it expects implementation of the February 13th agreement on disabling North Korea’s nuclear facilities to take full swing.
Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Chun Ho-sun told a regular news briefing that the presidential office also hopes that discussions on establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula would proceed as soon as possible.
Noting U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow’s remark Wednesday that his government was ready to begin talks on a peace regime for the Korean Peninsula, the spokesman said that Washington seems optimistic about prospects for peace on the peninsula.
Chun said that Seoul supports discussions on a Korean Peninsula peace regime at a separate forum among parties directly involved, in accordance with the September 19th, 2005 statement and the February 13, 2007 agreement.
He added that South Korea would play an active role in such discussions, describing Seoul as one of the most important direct parties.
The spokesman went on to say that the South Korean government has begun reviewing the issue in earnest.
