The government will begin delivering rice aid to North Korea overland on Friday.

A Unification Ministry official said that the first 50-thousand tons of rice would be delivered via overland routes as agreed to between the two Koreas. Altogether the total aid package will be 400-thousand tons.

Over the next five weeks, South Korea will send 25-hundred tons of rice four times a week.

Seoul is planning to send 30-thousand tons to Gaesong and 20-thousand tons to Goseong both in the North’s Gangwon Province.

The South has sent rice shipments by land two previous times in 2004 and 2005.
