Inter-Korean Military Talks Collapse

South and North Korea ended a rare round of high-level military talks on Thursday, but failed to narrow differences over disputed sea borders.

Negotiators from the two Koreas began the sixth-round of general-level talks in the truce village of Panmunjeon, only to end the session in about two hours without any progress, as North Korea insisted on redrawing the Northern Limit Line in the Yellow Sea.

After talks collapsed, South Korean Colonel Moon Seong-wook told reporters the two sides were miles apart over redefining the maritime border and establishing joint fishing areas.

He said the North refused to continue the talks unless the South changed its position.

The North made it a condition for the talks that a new maritime border be drawn to replace the Northern Limit Line, which has served as the de-facto sea border since the 1950-53 Korean War.

The two sides also failed to narrow differences over joint fishing areas. Seoul proposed such areas begin from the Northern Limit Line and extend from there, while Pyongyang insisted the fishing zones be set south of the maritime border.
