Japanese Pols to Discuss Returning Joseon Records

Japanese politicians will visit South Korea on Sunday to discuss the return of Joseon Dynasty records, the "Joseon Wangsil Uigwe," which are currently being held by the Japanese Imperial Household Agency.

The national committee on reclaiming royal records from Korea’s last dynasty said lawmakers Akira Kasai and Yasuo Ogata of the Japanese Communist Party were planning to visit the dynasty’s royal library at Mount Odae and the National Palace Museum of Korea next week.

They are expected to review conditions for returning the national assets and to sound out how much the Korean people want the historic records back.

In 2005, an 18th-century war monument, the Bukgwan Daecheopbi, was returned to North Korea and a replica was put on display in a South Korean museum. In 2006, Japan returned the Joseon Dynasty annals, which were taken along with other royal records during the Japanese occupation of Korea in the early 20th century.
