Gov't to Give 7 Bln Won Flood Aid to NK

The government will provide seven-point-one billion won worth of aid to North Korea to help it cope with heavy flooding.

In a briefing Friday, Unification Minister Lee Jae-joung announced the provision of the aid package including medicine, instant noodles, water, cooking utensils and other daily necessities.

He said that he would discuss land and sea transport with North Korean officials to ensure the earliest possible delivery of the relief aid.

Talks may also follow on providing materials and equipment for relief work and additional supplies.

The flooding is the result of heavy downpours of as much as 700 millimeters that pounded the North Korean side of Gangwon and South Pyeongan provinces over the past week.

The government said it decided to provide aid to the North on the belief that it had sustained considerable damage given that Pyongyang asked the United Nations and Red Cross for assistance.
