NK Cites Increased Flood Damage, Brisk Relief Work

The heavy downpours in North Korea have ended but surveys show that the flood damage has increased.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency said Tuesday that several hundred thousand tons of coal, the country's staple energy source, have been lost as four hundred coal mines have flooded or collapsed. The figures represent an increase from the agency's report last Friday.

Meanwhile, the North's Korean Central TV said Sunday that 14 percent of the country's farmland and one-hundred-ten-thousand homes have been damaged.

It also said that highway foundations leading to Pyongyang from Gaesong and Wonsan have been destroyed but that speedy restoration work is under way.
