Rallies For and Against Inter-Korean Summit Held

Progressive and conservative organizations are engaging in an ideological clash over the inter-Korean summit that begins Tuesday.

A progressive organization expressed hope for the success of the inter-Korean summit and the signing of a peace treaty at a rally on Monday in Yeongdeungpo, western Seoul.

But a couple conservative civic groups including the New Right Union staged demonstrations against the summit with North Korea.

They called for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula and urged President Roh Moo-hyun to cancel plans to attend the Arirang Festival mass gymnastic performance during his visit to the North.
