Russia: 'Summit Will Reduce Tensions on Korean Peninsula'

Russia has expressed hope that the 2007 inter-Korean summit will bring peace and stability to the Northeast Asian region along with more opportunities to prosper.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov said the summit will help reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula, adding that the two sides should find more ways to consolidate their ties.

He also said that Moscow supports the reunification of the two Koreas and that he hopes a lasting peace regime will be established on the peninsula in the near future.

Losyukov added that his country actively seeks to join in the development of a trans-Siberian railway, the transmission of electricity to the North and South, and the rebuilding of energy facilities in the North.
