Inter-Korean Infrastructure Projects to Expand

Inter-Korean infrastructure projects are expected to expand following a series of recent agreements between the two Koreas.

The two sides agreed at the summit which ended Thursday to jointly repair and use North Korea's dilapidated expressway linking Gaesong and Pyongyang, as well as the North's railway between Gaesong and Sinuiju.

They also agreed to open a 27-point-three-kilometer railway linking Munsan in the South to Gaesong in the North to transport freight to the Gaesong Industrial Complex, a deal expected to facilitate bilateral railway logistics exchanges.

In addition, the agreement will likely accelerate a project to link the Gaesong-Sinuiju railway to China. The Gaesong-Pyongyang expressway repairs are also projected to significantly improve the South's overland access to the North.

An official at Seoul's Ministry of Construction and Transportation said that no problems were found during a test run on the Gyeongui railway earlier this year, adding that the Gaesong-Pyongyang expressway was tested when the South Korean leader was driven to the North Korean capital on Tuesday.

The official said that if progress is made in repairing the highway, it will be used as an official route for discussions on inter-Korean economic cooperation.
