The United States has agreed to return to South Korea a Joseon Dynasty battle flag captured by a U.S. Naval fleet during a fight that occurred in the 19th century.

The command flag used by Joseon Dynasty General Eo Je-yeon will return home 136 years
after its capture. The Culture Heritage Administration says the U.S. Naval Academy has agreed to the flag's return on a long-term lease.

The flag will go on display at the National Museum of Korea on October 19th when it arrives in Seoul.

The square flag measuring four-and-a-five meters to a side has been displayed at the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland since the U.S. Navy took it as part of the spoils from an 1871 battle at Gwangseong Fort in Ganghwa Island off Incheon.

General Eo was killed along with 460 of his men in the bloody battle.

Three U.S. warships invaded the island in retaliation for the Joseon government's burning of U.S. commercial vessel General Sherman, which had come to Joseon demanding trade.
