Foreign Minister Defends NLL Comments

Foreign Minister Song Min-soon has defended President Roh Moo-hyun's comments on the de facto sea border between the two Koreas.

President Roh is under fire for saying earlier this week that the Northern Limit Line (NLL) is not an official border.

Returning from a week-long trip to Europe Sunday, Song told reporters that if South Korea readjusts or decides on the NLL under a 1992 inter-Korean agreement, it will discuss the necessary parts with the United States.

Song said, however, that a decision will be based on Seoul's judgment since South Korea basically watches the maritime boundary.

He said the border is quite different from demarcation lines with other countries, adding the relationship between South and North Korea is very unique and what the president meant is that the NLL is not a border defined by the Constitution.
