Gov't Seeks Separate Talks on Peace Zone

The government is seeking talks with North Korea this December to establish a special West Sea peace zone, one of the key accords in the second inter-Korean summit declaration.

A special committee on implementing the inter-Korean summit agreements reached the decision during its first meeting Monday chaired by Unification Minister Lee Jae-joung.

During the meeting, government officials also decided to set up a task force charged with the peace zone project that will comprise officials from the presidential office and the ministries of unification, defense and construction and transportation.

Participants agreed to seek tangible results toward implementation of the recent inter-Korean summit declaration by holding an inter-Korean prime minister-level meeting, a meeting of defense chiefs and an economic cooperation committee meeting all next month.

The two Korean leaders agreed in their summit earlier this month to establish a special West Sea zone including the North Korean city of Haeju and its surrounding waters, which will feature a joint fishing zone and a special business district.
