Gov’t Seeks to Host 6-Party Energy Meeting Next Week

A six-party working group on energy aid to North Korea may meet again as early as next week in the truce village of Panmunjeom.

Government sources said that Seoul, which chairs the group, was consulting with the other parties to arrange a meeting date.

The sources said the six parties would discuss how to deliver another 350-thousand tons of heavy fuel oil, while repairing North Korean power facilities and providing other energy aid equivalent to 500-thousand tons of fuel oil.

Under a six-party nuclear agreement, North Korea is entitled to one million tons of heavy oil or equivalent aid once it declares and disables its nuclear programs. South Korea and China have each provided 50-thousand tons in addition to the initial 50-thousand ton shipment provided by Seoul.
