NK Violated NLL Twice since Summit

North Korean vessels were found to have crossed the Northern Limit Line (NLL) twice since the inter-Korean summit held two weeks ago.

Grand Natonal Party lawmaker Maeng Hyung-kyu on Wednesday cited a Defense Ministry report that said North Korean fishing vessels had crossed the West Sea border on October fifth and 14th. In both instances, the South Korean Coast Guard was dispatched to the scene.

The report also said a North Korean patrol boat had violated the NLL on September 21st, prompting the South Korean Navy to issue warning signals.

Representative Maeng said since the two Koreas announced plans for the inter-Korean summit in early August, North Korean ships had violated the NLL a total of six times.

He claimed the North violated the border line to gauge South Korea’s response ahead of the summit.

Maeng stressed the need for Seoul to step up its alertness on border areas and to keep the boundaries in place.
