Koreas Seek UN Endorsement of Summit Accords

The two Koreas are seeking United Nations support for the agreements reached during their summit earlier this month.

The South and North Korean missions to the U.N. have recently submitted a joint draft resolution to the U.N. General Assembly, urging its support for the summit accords.

The resolution called the summit a ground-breaking event for enhancing Korean ties and peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.

It calls for U.N. support for the full implementation of the summit declaration and for inter-Korean dialogue and unification.

U.N. General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim is circulating the resolution to all member states. An assembly panel Friday will decide whether to include the resolution on the agenda.

A U.N. official says that if it makes the agenda, the resolution will likely be adopted, as a similar resolution to support the 2000 inter-Korean summit had also won adoption.
