6-Way Energy Working Group Meets Monday

The six-way energy working group has opened talks at the truce village of Panmunjeom to discuss supplying North Korea with heavy fuel oil and materials to repair an aging power plant.

During the two-day talks, South Korea, the U.S., China, and Russia will discuss what materials to provide and how to deliver them.

In the February 13th six-party nuclear accord, five members of the six-party nuclear talks agreed to provide the North with 950-thousand tons of fuel oil or equivalent aid.

North Korea reportedly wants 450-thousand tons of heavy fuel oil and assistance worth 500-thousand tons of fuel in construction materials and equipment for the maintenance and repair of the power plant.

The four countries will discuss the matter based on a list of items North Korea delivered to South Korea, the host of the six-nation energy working group talks.

In addition, the talks will discuss when the U.S. and Russia will supply the North with 50-thousand tons of oil each. South Korea and China have each completed the shipment of 50-thousand tons of fuel oil between July and October.

South Korea held a preparatory meeting with the North ahead of the energy working group talks last week at the Mount Geumgang resort.

South Korea’s deputy chief delegate to the six-party nuclear talks Lim Sung-nam is chairing the meeting.
