Lucent wins Korea Telecom optical networking contract

Lucent Technologies of the United States has won a contract to supply optical networking systems to Korea Telecom.
Under the 40 million dollar deal, Lucent will build optical networking systems to link five South Korean cities ... Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju over three years. The network will allow the company to offer a variety of services including high-speed data networking.
Korea Telecom; the largest telecommunications provider in South Korea, plans to launch the services in December.
The 35 systems Lucent will initially deliver, will have a capacity of 400 gigabits per second, the equivalent of sending the data of 75 CD-ROMs each second. A Lucent spokesman said the systems can be upgraded to transmitting one point six terabits of information per second, Lucent said.
