Red Cross to Expand Reunion Scale

The National Red Cross plans major changes for inter-Korean family reunions once the reunion center is completed next year at North Korea's Mount Geumgang resort.

Under the plan, reunions will be held more often, from the current twice yearly to once a month. The reunions will grow in scale, as participation will be doubled from the current 100 family members from each side.

In addition, those who have already reunited with their families in North Korea may be able to see them every week.

The Red Cross also plans to allow all family members of South Korean reunion applicants to meet with their North Korean kin, and vice versa, which could greatly increase the size of the reunions. Currently, only individual applicants are allowed to attend.

Also on the table is a proposal to let reunited families sleep in the same room at the reunion center.
