Habitat Offers to Build Houses for Flood-hit NK Areas

Habitat for Humanity says it has offered to build houses for North Koreans who lost their homes in September due to heavy flooding.

Director of Communications of the organization’s Asia-Pacific office, Peter Witton, told Radio Free Asia Thursday that Habitat had expressed its wish to join reconstruction projects in flood-hit areas.

He said it's difficult to push forward construction plans in the North until Pyongyang gives its approval as construction efforts would require substantial government help.

According to the U.S. government-funded radio, Pyongyang has yet to respond to Habitat’s offer.

Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity is a non-governmental, non-profit organization devoted to building "simple, decent, and affordable" housing.

Homes are built using volunteer labor and are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage.
