President Kim Dae-jung says the government will spend three hundred billion won or two-hundred-30 million U.S. dollars to support the development of basic sciences over the next three years.
The president made the financial commitment at a meeting with members of the Academies of Sciences and Arts Wednesday.
Mr. Kim said that without the development of basic sciences, there would be no development of applied sciences, and without the development of arts and culture, the nation would hardly survive in the upcoming knowledge-based world of the 21st century.
