Following the lead in U.S. airlines, South Korea's number two carrier, Asiana Airlines has announced job cuts.
A company spokesman said it will lay off 360 workers and suspend some domestic flights because of the terrorist attacks in the United States.
He said Asiana plans to trim its work force by five point three percent with voluntary leaves, early retirement incentives and furloughs. Beginning early next month, the company will also suspend four unprofitable domestic flights and reduce the number of weekly flights to Los Angeles from 14 to eleven.
The company said it would suspend more unprofitable flights.
Korean Air, the nation's number one carrier, announced similar measures this week.
The airlines said they anticipate a 20 percent drop in the number of passengers to the United States during the remainder of this year.
The South Korean government Tuesday announced plans to provide one and a half billion dollars in insurance liability payment guarantees to domestic airlines until the end of October.
Beset by high fuel prices and lower demand, Korean Air and Asiana had suffered losses even before the September eleventh attacks.
