The U.S. wants greater transparency in distribution of food aid to North Korea.

A State Department official told Voice of America that confirming whether food aid will really go to North Koreans is a top priority.

He stressed Washington's commitment to providing food aid to the North, saying it will try to keep its promise to resume food aid.

According to a diplomatic source in Washington, U.S. officials put priority on food distribution monitoring when they visited the North late last month to discuss aid resumption.

The source said the two sides have yet to reach agreement, but are engaged in serious exchanges of opinion.
