The National Academy of Korean Language has completed a ten-year long project to establish a database on the Korean language.
It has also developed an electronic Korean-language dictionary containing 600-thousand words and expressions.
Launched in 1998, the “21st Century Sejong Project” has cost 15 billion won, or about 16-point-two million dollars. Some 200 researchers a year have participated in the project.
The database consists of 200 million text corpuses from various sources including magazines, newspapers and novels.
The world’s largest database for any language will enable sophisticated computerized translation and spelling correction.
In linguistics, a text corpus is a large and structured set of texts. They are used for statistical analysis, checking occurrences or validating linguistic rules.
