NK Offers to Set Up Joint Fishing Zone South of NLL

South and North Korea have discussed the establishment of a joint fishing zone in the West Sea, but failed to narrow differences.

The second day of inter-Korean general-level military talks Thursday were deadlocked on the issue, as the proposed fishing zone overlaps with the Northern Limit Line (NLL). Seoul has long maintained that the NLL is the de facto western sea border between the two Koreas.

The North is said to have proposed that the joint fishing zone be located in four different places south of the NLL.

Meanwhile, military officers from the two Koreas engaged in a tussle over whether to open their talks to the media.

A North Korean Navy official tried to show a slide of the North's fishing zone proposal to reporters. But a South Korean naval officer rushed over and stopped the presentation, triggering a scuffle.

The talks are scheduled to continue until Friday.
