Koreas Fail to Agree on Joint Fishing Zone

The two Koreas have failed to agree on a joint fishing zone in the West Sea.

On the last day of general-level military talks held Friday at the truce village of Panmunjeom, the two sides struggled to finalize the draft text exchanged Thursday on establishing the fishing and peace zones.

But the talks ended around noon without an agreement, as the two sides remained deadlocked over the zone's location.

Neither an agreement on the result of the talks nor a joint statement was adopted.

During the three-day talks, the North demanded a joint fishing area south of the Northern Limit Line, which the South has long claimed as its western sea border.

But the South wants the zone to straddle an equal amount of both sides' territorial waters.
