An American public library has opened a Korean reading room, the first to be established in the United States.
A ceremony was held Monday to mark the opening of the reading room in the Queens Library in Flushing, New York, which is home to a large East Asian population, including Chinese, Taiwanese and Korean peoples.
Named “Window on Dynamic Korea,” the reading room holds some four-thousand books and multimedia materials on Korean history, culture and economy.
The National Library of Korea and the Korean Overseas Information Service jointly donated some 26-hundred books on Korea and some two-hundred-40 videos, in addition to 50-thousand dollars for the purchase of new chairs and computers for the reading room.
Queens Library Director Tom Galante said the new reading room will provide the opportunity for New York citizens to learn more about Korean people and history.
He thanked the Korean government for its strong support, saying the Korean reading room will also expand the library’s scope of knowledge.
