A nightclub singer has been fined for being a celebrity imposter.

The Seoul Central District Court has slapped a fine of seven million won on a person identified only as Mr. Im, who took on the identity of famed singer Park Sang-min.

The ruling said someone who mimics the name, appearance and singing of another famous singer is not necessarily prohibited, as he or she entertains customers who have a slim chance to meet the real celebrity.

The court said, however, that if someone failed to publicize his or her disguise and pretended to be the real singer, that is illegal competition.

Im is known to have dressed up as singer Park and lipsynced his songs at nightclubs for a year.
